I am doing WWOOF – a month-long programme where I am working on a French farm. I am writing a daily blog about my experiences. I will write in English and French. My French isn’t perfect and there will be mistakes. And I may use Frenglish. I welcome all corrections. I tend to transliterate more than translate, but I’m working to improve this. Considering this, the French sections of the blog won’t be exact word-for-word translations from the English. Firstly, the language doesn’t work like that and secondly I make jokes and references in the English that won’t translate over to the French
Today began the same as any other day – in the middle of the night with the goats causing chaos outside – then again a few hours later. Although they did wake me up in time to see this lovely sunrise.
Anyway, at 9hr, work began. Oceane had left. While I was mucking out the horses, Elisabeth told me that she would be leaving for a few days. She gave me instructions on how to feed her rabbits.
After I finished shovelling up shit at 10hr, Matthias and I continued moving the firewood inside. We did this until half 11 when we took water to Rose and Lily in their grazing field.
We also brought back some of the bags of apples from the orchard. We returned to the farm and had lunch at 12hr30. Matthias explained that one of their old WWOOFERS lives near here and they’ve stayed in contact- they invited Elisabeth to stay with them for a few days.
Matthias asked me how I feel after a week and I feel good. I think my French is improving to which he agreed. I also asked him how long he and Elisabeth have been married for – 23 years and they’ve been together for 27. He also explained that they’ve been working with WWOOF for 7 years. There wouldn’t be any more work until the late afternoon, so I went cycling.
With weather this nice, how could I not? I only cycled a few kilometres, as the weather didn’t stay nice for long.
At 15hr30, I returned to the farm and at 5 work recommenced. Matthais and I cycled to his apple orchard and we moved the sheep enclosure further along, so they could graze fresh grass. While we were doing this, it begun raining.
At 18hr30, we returned to the farm where I hurried to get the wood that had been drying on the grass, inside and away from the rain. We also took water to the cows. At 7 the work had finished and at 20hr15, we ate dinner. I know I keep saying this, but my French is definitely best at mealtimes. Tonight, I spoke with Matthias at length on a number of topics.
He told me about how he used too windsurf as a young man and I talked about the one time I went surfing in the Isle of Wight – one of the best experiences of my life. He also explained that the wood I’ve been moving inside is for a wood oven, as we’ll be baking bread this week. How exciting.
He also asked me about my goals in life. I explained about my love of writing and how I want to be a famous writer someday. Who knows? Maybe my writing career will take off from this little blog. And that’s it for day 9. A day of firewood, horses and running from the rain.
French
Aujourd’hui a commencé la même a les autres – pendant le milieu de la nuit avec les chèvres faisaient un désordre a l’extérieur et encore un peu heures plus tard.
Alors le travailleur a commencé a 9hjr ou j’ai nettoyé les stables. Tandis que je le fais, Elisabeth m’a dit qu’elle serait au loin par un peu jours et elle m’a montré comment a donner le manger ses lapins.
Alors 10hr, Matthias et moi a continué mettre le boire du chauffage dans sa cave. A 11hr30, on a donné l’eau a les chevaux Rose et Lily.
Aussi, on apporté les sacs des pommes de l’orchade.
A 12hr30, on apprit notre déjeuner. Matthias m’a dit qu’une vielle WWOOF des leurs qui ils sont à rester contacte avec aux et ils invitent Elisabeth a resté avec eux.
Aussi, Matthias m’a demandé comment est-que tout le choses parce que j’ai été ici par une semaine maintenant. Et, j’ai dit que mon Français est amélioré jour par jour. Je suis plus confident avec ça. Aussi, il a dit qu’il et Elisabeth a marie par 23ans et ensemble pour 27ans. Aussi, il a dit qu’il travailla avec WWOOF par 7ans. Il n’y avait plus travaille pour l’apres-midi donc je faisais du velo. Il faisait tres beau !
Alors, je ne faisais du velo pas des longtemps parce que la météo était changée. Je pense que le mieux météo est fini maintenant. Alors, je suis retourné a 17hr, Matthias et moi faisait du velo a les mouttons dans l’orcharde, donc we could move their enclosure forwards so they could graze fresh gass. Pendant, on le faisait, j’ai presque tombée parce que j’ai steppe sur les pommes. Matthais a dit est qu’il ya une expression en Français : tombée sur les pommes (or to faint or swoon) mais j’ai vraiment tombée sur les pommes. Alors, pendant on le faisait, il commence pluie. Donc, on est retourne la ferme ou j’ai continué mets le boire qu’était sèche sur la terre dans ‘interieur. Aussi, on a donner l’eau a les vaches. A 19hr, le travailler par le jour a fini.
A 20hr30, on apprit notre diner. Mon Français a continué améliore a Matthais et moi parle sur une variété des sujets. Matthias m’a dit quand il était jeune, il était très adventurous, il adoré windsurfing. Et je l’ai dit du la fois j’ai faisais du surf dans l’isle du White – un la mieux expérience dans ma vie.
Aussi, il m’a dit que le boire que j’ai été mettent l’intérieur est par un boire pour au cette semaine, on ferait du pan. Tres hautement. Finalement, il m’a demandé de mes projets et j’ai expliqué du mon amour pour l’écriture et mon rêve d’être un écriveur populaire un jour. Qui sait ? Peut-etre, mon carrer d’écriture serait commencé parce que du blog.
Alors, c’est tout pour day 9. Un jour de feu de chauffage, les chevaux et cours de la pluie.
